For Randstad I was responsible for leading the design system team. We translated the global brand housestyle into a rich design system. The key results where 60% faster delivery of front-end and 50% faster delivery of design. But most of all we created consistency over all digital touchpoints.

The business challenge
Randstad had a rebranding in 2017. The re-branding needed to be implemented in all digital products. Because Randstad is a de-centralized business, the costs are made locally. We needed to come up with a global, centralized and a more sustainable solution which operational companies could benefit from.

Our main priority was to translate the re-branding into a ready to use digital design system. Our vision was to have a consistent brand experience on all Randstad digital touchpoints. Our mission was to enable teams to create digital products better, faster and more cost efficiently. We did this by giving access to a single source of truth in design & code for external & internal facing applications.

The design system is based on the atomic Design method and delivers Sketch files and front-end code. We defined naming conventions, core interactions and scalability for all components.

Product backlog
Delivering a design system doesn't have an end date. It is a living product with a roadmap, planning and goals to work towards. We worked in 2 weeks sprints and had a monthly newsletter to communicate to the business what we delivered.

Our goal with the design system has always been to deliver a consistent brand experience on all digital touchpoints of Randstad. With the design system we have been able to deliver a public and logged in environment for more than 10+ countries.

Documentation
We documented everything on a publicly available website. This way all the documentation was easily accessible for people inside and outside Randstad. This website houses a getting started, design and code documentation, the style guide, design patters and all components.

My role in this project was to lead a team of a Senior Visual Designer and 3 front-end developers. My job was to make sure business requirements were met and everyone knew what they were doing. I reported to the Global Head of CX.
